The Irish Guild of Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers

Muriel Beckett

Muriel Beckett is a weaver who specialises in floor rugs and wall hangings.

I first became interested in printed and woven textile design while a student at Dun Laoghaire School of Art and Design. I then studied “The Principles of Teaching Art” at The National College of Art & Design in Dublin followed by a further year’s study at The Wetterhoff College of Textiles in Finland on a scholarship from The Irish Export Board.

Since that time I have been involved in teaching weaving in a number of areas – giving private courses, at primary and third level and in the disability sector.
I also work to commission, both private and public, and have exhibited regularly in Ireland and abroad.

I have been weaving floor rugs and wallhangings for many years and never tired of exploring the possibilities presented by design, colour, pattern and weave structures. It is a continual challenge. My inspiration comes from many sources – from nature primarily, and also through studying various forms of design and applied art – both historical and contemporary
